NuFletch Instant Fletching System
Fletchings
By Bill Krenz
Last evening I was practicing my shooting for an upcoming antelope hunt, and I inadvertently punched a hole in one of the vanes on one of the arrows. That hole occurred when I shot three arrows at one spot on the target at 40 yards. While that sort of tight-group accuracy is hugely satisfying, it can be hard on fletching.
The arrow I damaged was one I’d fletched myself, so––being in a hurry––I thought I’d simply scrape off the damaged vane and replace it with another. I was careful, and I tried to line everything up just so in my fletching jig, but the end result was less than acceptable. When I looked at the re-fletched setup, the new vane was slightly off kilter. In the end, I had to strip all three vanes off that arrow and start over. In total I burned over an hour last evening fixing that one arrow.
If I had been using the revolutionary NuFletch System, the fix would have taken all of 15 seconds and would have been perfect the first time! In fact, I would have replaced that torn vane right at the target, right after I pulled the arrow. Then I would have walked back and immediately shot that arrow again.
The NuFletch Instant Fletching System represents a startling new way to fletch arrows. NuFletch completely eliminates fletching jigs and all gluing. With the NuFletch System even my 5-year-old granddaughter can fletch an arrow perfectly in under a minute.
It has always seemed to me that the best new products are the ones that make things easier. NuFletch does just that.
NuFletch is based on multiple U.S. patents and years of evolving prototypes. It incorporates a precisely machined unit that screws into the back of your arrow in the same way that a broadhead screws into the front of your arrow. Everyone is familiar with installing inserts into the front end of arrows to accept target points or broadheads. It’s an accurate, time-proven system. To utilize NuFletch all you do is cut your arrow shafts approximately 3 inches shorter than normal and then install standard screw-in inserts at both ends of those shafts. Your chosen point screws into the front insert, and the revolutionary NuFletch unit screws into the rear insert. To “fletch” the arrow, you then simply unscrew the nock end of the NuFletch unit, slide three vanes into the precisely machined slots and then reattach the nock end. All that takes just seconds and there’s no fuss or muss. You could, I suppose, even change vane colors in the field in just seconds to fit special hunting situations. It’s a very cool system.
I must admit that I did have some initial reservations when I was first introduced to the NuFletch Instant Fletching System. Could precise fletching really be this easy? Would NuFletch prove accurate? What would be the effect of the extra weight on the back of my arrows?
The answer to the first question is the easiest. NuFletch really is that simple and effective. NuFletch makes fletching and re-fletching arrows a fast and convenient snap.
Is NuFletch accurate? It sure seems so. I recently set up a dozen new arrow shafts, half with conventional glue-on fletching and half with the NuFletch System to compare shooting characteristics. The NuFletch arrows shot tiny groups just like the conventionally fletched arrows. As long as the rear shaft insert was installed straight, the NuFletch arrows shot just fine.
Each standard NuFletch unit I tested weighed approximately 66 grains. At first blush that may seem like a fair amount to add to the back end of any arrow, and I was curious as to the actual effect it would have on my shooting. The first thing I noticed was that cutting nearly 3 inches off of my normal shaft length somewhat stiffened those shafts. Then adding the NuFletch unit to the back of those shortened shafts effectively stiffened the spine of the overall arrow a bit more. That’s all fine. A stiffer arrow is almost always desirable, especially with broadheads.
Obviously, arrow weight also changed. My conventionally fletched test arrows weighed an average of 408 grains. The same NuFletch arrows averaged 453 grains. The effect of that was that through my chronograph the NuFletch arrows were only about 10 feet per second slower (273 feet per second versus 285 feet per second) than the conventionally fletched arrows. The reality of that situation is that such a minimal speed difference is barely perceptible in both flight and in downrange arrow impact. While it may sound like a lot to some, its tangible effect on shooting is negligible.
Another way to look at it is that the extra arrow weight boosts penetration, as the available kinetic energy jumps from 73.6 foot-pounds with the conventionally fletched arrows to 75.1 foot-pounds with the NuFletch arrows.
Better new products often make things easier. By thinking outside the conventional arrow-fletching box, the inventive folks at NuFletch have created a new and groundbreaking fletching system that’s both easier and much more convenient. It’s also accurate and highly effective with today’s fast carbon arrows. NuFletch is available to fit most popular carbon arrow shaft sizes and crossbow bolts, in a variety of colors and in straight and offset fletching patterns.
