Turkey Season Off To A Bang!
By Jace Bauserman
I love turkey season! The sound of deafing gobbles and the sight of a vibrant fan is something I crave. During the months of April and May I just can't seem to stay out of the turkey woods.
The Colorado turkey season officially kicked off this past Saturday, but I just couldn't wait that long. Turkey hunting holds a special place in my heart—it’s something I just can't seem to get enough of. Luckily, Jay Waring, Owner of Purgatoire Outfitters, enrolls his properties in Colorado's Ranching For Wildlife Program. This means Jay got to start hunting on April 1st, and I wasn't about to let my good buddy go alone. I figured a band of Merriam’s might overrun his position and he may need a little assistance. Turns out…I was right.
The birds were heavily flocked up and not responding to calls, but after two days of hard hunting I finally loosed an arrow. A parade of 13 gorgeous Merriam gobblers strolled in front of the blind, which we had situated in a pinch-point. Bringing the Bear Carnage to full draw I settled my pin and released a perfect arrow. The bird didn’t go far.
Putting my hands on my white-tipped trophy I felt blessed. Blessed to be standing in a landscape wrapped in the garb of spring. Blessed to have heard a symphony of gobbles reverberating off the canyon walls. But most of all, blessed to be able to take to the woods with my trusty bow and arrow.
How are your spring hunts going?
I would love to hear from you.
Good Hunting and God Bless!
